The Rustic Appeal of Antler Sconces
Antler sconces are great decorative and practical option for lighting in a variety of decors where a certain amount of rustic, “rugged outdoor”, Northwest, or Old West appeal is desired. Antler sconces have been a popular accessory found in log cabins, timber homes, ski lodges, and trophy rooms for ages. The great thing about antler sconces is they can be a practical alternative and compromise when a man wants to give a certain amount of rugged appeal to a room, and knows his wife is not likely to go for a trophy mounted buck anytime soon. These rustic and authentic looking sconces can have a dramatic effect in dens, offices and “man caves”.

My wife was never a big fan of allowing my trophy antlers to be displayed anywhere other than the basement. I ended up crafting my own antler wall sconces, which had a rustic and naturally authentic looking lampshade attached. My homemade antler sconces ended up in our kitchen of all places. Once my wife saw how attractive and elegant the Antler Sconces looked mounted on both sides of our dining cabinet, I didn't hear any more complaints from her. That was back in 1972 if I recall correctly, and sure enough those antler sconces are still there 40 years later, even though my nephew now owns and lives in the house. (By the way , my nephew and his wife are absolute “opposite” of outdoors people)
It's best to get familiar with the different styles of antler lighting available so you can make an informed decision. First and foremost the choice of authentic antlers versus manufactured ones might seem to be an important choice, but the good news is that the manufactured (fake) acrylic antlers look so real, that unless you're a hunter or outdoors person, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Secondly, decide if you looking for an antler sconce with a lampshade or exposed light bulbs. The lightbulbs used in antler sconces are most always incandescent. I have never seen an antler sconce with a compact fluorescent light bulb, but I'm pretty sure it would spoil the authentic and rustic desired appearance.
Here are a couple of quick tips and ideas to consider before you head out shopping for an antler sconce:
- Authentic antlers are usually at least twice the price of synthetic versions. This may not be a big sticking point but for those looking for the utmost in authentic appeal, I would recommend authentic antlers if only to honor the dignity of these majestic animals who allowed us the chance to enjoy their wonderful natural gift.
- If you’re spending a considerable amount of money on an antler sconce, make sure that the antlers are drilled, so that the electrical lighting wires can be concealed inside the antlers.
- The wall mount portion of the sconce can have a dramatic effect on the overall appearance. Do a Google image search on “antler sconce” and you'll get a good idea of some of the different unique options, such as old-fashioned snowshoes, and exotic winged mounts made of burn carved wood, timber slabs, and even antique weathered metals copper, bronze, and tin.
- To antlers that come from the same animal can be mounted in a symmetrical fashion which has a very traumatic effect, this is especially true with real antlers where you'll see just slight differences between the symmetry of the left and right antler.
- The decision on whether to get an antler sconce with a lampshade or exposed can make a big difference in the visual appeal of the mounted wall sconce. Natural animal hide lampshades with rustic stitching will offer a warm, pleasant yellowish glow that will warm the room.
Outdoor antler sconces are also available, which make it possible to add an authentic, rustic looking atmosphere to your outdoor patio or pool area. Be sure to get an Antler Sconce that is outdoor rated and UL listed. Both real and acrylic antlers will both hold up fine in the outdoors, after all mother nature made those deer antlers pretty darn rugged.
What size deer antlers should you get for your wall sconce?
If you're looking for larger size, more majestic antlers consider those from the mule deer. Mule deer antlers are typically around 20 to 30 inches in length. On the other hand, if your decor calls for less dramatic decorative antlers, you may want to choose white tail deer, whose antlers are among the smallest. For the grandest and most majestic deer antlers of all, go with moose or elk Antler Sconces.
Remember, Antler Sconces should be used as decorative accent lighting, not as the primary source of light for the interior space. In general, antlers displayed on the wall as a lighting accessory will look much more dramatic and authentically rustic when the room is relatively dimly lit.
